Benjamin Muir is the composer of many works-in-progress, and even some finished “pieces that are reflective and celebrate community” (The Oberlin Review). Benjamin is currently studying Composition and English at Oberlin, where they might not have achieved world fame, but they’ve still had a pretty good time. Benjamin is an alum of the Tanglewood Young Composers Program, and a winner of the National Young Composers Challenge, which they want me to tell you is still probably their most prestigious award, no matter that it was six years ago. Their music has been performed by the Musikos Collective, the Tanglewood Young Artists’ Orchestra, and musicians from the Seattle Symphony. Benjamin’s quartet Piece by Piece was recorded by Unheard-of//Ensemble (although it was really just a brief sightreading session). Their senior recital featured a 50-piece orchestra of students and community members. Benjamin keeps saying they just want to write “silly little music” for their friends. I’m not quite sure what that means, but if I were you, I wouldn’t entirely discount the world fame thing yet.
